Beruwela and Bentota
The wide Bentota River separates the sandy beaches, restaurants and bars of Beruwala from the adjacent resorts of Bentota. Most of the resorts in Bentota and Beruwela have been upgraded recently, with spas added to meet the demand for relaxing ayurvedic massage and other health and beauty treatments. Some of the best-located resorts are on the peninsula bathed on one side by the Indian Ocean, and on the other by the river, with coconut palms on both sides. As with most major beach resorts along the southwest coast, many places in Bentota offer major water sports including swimming, water skiing on the rivers or estuaries, snorkelling, scuba diving, wind surfing, parasailing and fishing. Though a prominent beach resort in Sri Lanka, Bentota remains pristine, its tranquil waters and idyllic beaches have earned it a position amongst Forbes Magazines Best Beaches in Asia in 2010.

Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay, often referred to as one of the best kept secrets on the island and rated as one of the top ten surf points in the world by the international surfing community – touted as 4th best in South East Asia -, comes into its own as a surfing destination from May to September. Visitors are rewarded with cinnamon sands, clear blue skies and two-metre waves that provide a 400-metre-long ride.

Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa, almost 100 kilometres south of Colombo, has long been known as Sri Lankas most popular beach resort, famed for its surf and coral reef as well as its wide range of accommodation, food, fun and shopping. This is perhaps the only coastal region where that special holiday feeling dominates town, with shops selling resort wear, renting out bicycles, offering courses in scuba diving and selling all kinds of local souvenirs, batik fabric and jewellery. Today its a favourite with the younger visitor and the vibrant nightlife also attracts young Sri Lankans looking for out-of-town fun and entertainment on the weekends.

Trincomalee & Nilaveli
Trincomalee, with its magnificent deep harbour, has for centuries been a magnet for merchants, adventurers and colonists. Although the town offers a number of interesting attractions, including a fort and the famous Hindu temple on a rock promontory above the sea, most visitors head for the legendary Nilaveli Beach, or the far less developed, though equally lovely, beach of Uppaveli.

Negambo
The long-established beach resorts at Negombo, north of Colombo and conveniently close to the international airport — offer the opportunity of discovering a historic town with the remains of an ancient fort, many lovely old Catholic churches and Dutch-built canals, and of seeing the local fishermen in their outrigger canoes in the tranquil lagoon behind the beach.

Unawatuna
Beyond Galle the island of Sri Lanka curves eastward and just five miles along this curve, the south coast beach resorts begin with Unawatuna, a pretty sweep of sand backed by a number of small, moderately priced hotels and restaurants. Here, you can snorkel or scuba dive over wrecks, or enjoy lazing on the palm-shaded beach or swimming in the calm clear sea

Mirissa
The delightful sandy beach of Mirissa was once a well-kept secret, but not surprisingly, more guesthouses, inns and bungalows are now opening up to visitors. Mirissa boasts a safe, gently sloping beach where the sea is free from rocks, with coconut palms growing right to the edge of the sand as if in imitation of a postcard of the perfect tropical beach. Off the coast of Mirissa, the gentle giants of the sea Blue Whales frolic with bottlenose Dolphins, Sperm Whales and Humpbacks

Tangalle
Many people claim that the beaches around Tangalle have the softest sand and the safest sea along the entire south coast. Tangalle seems set to become the most exclusive of the beaches along the south coast, and offers a chance to scuba dive around the coral reef protecting its four kilometres of sandy beach, and to explore a couple of wrecks. You could also watch nesting marine turtles drag themselves ashore at night to lay their eggs at Rekwalla

Weligama to Tangalle Bay
The stretch from Tangalle Bay to Weligama is a beautiful coastline with rugged rocks, sandy beaches and coconut groves. Rated by Forbes magazine as amongst Asias Best Beaches, a number of secluded beaches and tiny rocky coves characterise the pristine and rather romantic fishing hamlets. At Ahangama and Koggala, fishermen perch on stilts wedged deep into the sand just offshore, sitting on a crossbar and using a line to catch fish as they move in and out with the tide.

Pasikuda and Kalkuda
Kalkuda and Pasikuda are two pristine, untouched beaches in the East coast of Sri Lanka. Their white sands, calm waters and sheer beauty remain unrivalled. Close to the town of Batticloa, both the beaches are expected to become international hotspots, as more people discover the charming beauty of this paradisiacal beach.

Dondra Head
The southernmost point of Sri Lanka is Dondra Head, where the classic white-painted lighthouse was built by the British in 1889. It takes 250 steps to the top, but the view makes every step worthwhile. If you gaze to the south -- and assuming you could see forever -- you wouldnt see a single spot of land until Antarctica.

Wadduwa
Wadduwa is roughly an hours drive south of Colombo. Its beaches have golden sands and are perfect for those who are looking for a spot in the sun, amidst the shade of bending and obliging coconut trees.
